The enemy's best technique, however, ist to divide and conquer. Of course, children and adults alike are damaged through believing stories that probably never happened -- but evolution is not the answer either.

Nobody had any idea what the tablet said until recently when they discovered the fact that the tablet described in detail the positions and locations of known constellations which is quite better to describe.

I would welcome these assholes to jet around off the coast of Florida here. The Gulf of Mexico. Wide open space. They won't piss off anyone with their screaming engines. As long they go way out there, away from any Floridians that love to shoot at jet skis and motorboats. In fact, keep going until you reach Mexico, where alcohol & girls are cheap and laws are non-existent. It's okay, you won't run out of gas on the way, I promise. Just keep going south-west, away from Ryan's lake, until you reach Mexico ;-}

I don't "blame Jehovah" because Jehovah is a fictional character in a book, not a person. I might just as well "blame Cinderella" or "blame Santa Claus". There is nobody to praise or blame except the people who can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality. For them I have more compassion these days than anger but I wrote this post several years ago.

Dear ryan i am angry with them as well.But please do not blame jehovah.I lost my mother to cancer in 2008,my brother to a heart attack,a brother to murder,and my dad to a heart attack as well.The witnesses i have known for 20 years suddenly stopped speaking to me.I am going with another faith..I would not treat my dog the way they have treated me,yet they have such an ego of being on the so called new earth...

I believe everything you say ryan. Thanks for your story-I dont feel so alone now. The Jehovah Witnesses are very mean and cruel people, not to mention HYPOCRITES!
They have persecuted my family for over 20 yrs. You dont ask any questions about their failed prophesies are question them in any way.
They are being persecuted now esp in Russia, E. Europe and other places in the world. They dont like it much and are outnumbered.

Ry -- I hadn't been tracking that you actually went to the hearing. Just now seeing your excellent play-by-play, like a month later. Don't know if you went because of my (e-mail? phone call? I think it was call, right?), but glad to see you were there. Still boggles my addled little noggin that someone could find Bone objectionable. That Ramona person -- I'll give her props for taking interest in her kids desire to read, I guess -- but otherwise, her small, addled little mind needs to be pulled out of a dark place.

This ridiculous obsession with connecting everything with the Bible is really really annoying, mainly because it gives believers who don’t pay any attention to the details the illusion that archeology is supporting their book while the many sites support other way.

Let me tell all a little known fact about a jehovah's witness in brooklyn, ny. This Person has the worst dysfunctional family i ever seen his wife is in heavy illigal drugs his kid never leaves his room and play's video games all night, The jehovah's witness is always at home screaming and swearing in spanish his wife a few months back was at a rehab center was going to the kingdom hall and now she is doing more illigal drugs than before. If any one ever goes to the train station at Myrtel and wycoff Ave (L line), (M line). you will see this old man handing out books, ask him about his wife drug problem and he will talk about it on the open.......

Wow. It's bizarre to me that this went as far as a committee meeting! (Really? _Bone_?) It's almost funny that the ban's one proponent (on the committee) was such, not because he thought the material was genuinely inappropriate, but because he thought it's too advanced, and possibly even enjoyable. Incredible. A "No Child Left In Front" policy.

I'm with Falterer, here. The person on my friends list that "liked" this particular page eventually "unliked" it after the general outrage it caused among her friends. She was simply too embarrassed to share this opinion publicly. I think that's a much better outcome than simply silencing her.

I have no problem with a private company deciding it doesn't want to host a particular piece of speech. It's their resources and their prerogative. But I joyfully defend a private company's decision _not_ to silence the legal free speech its visitors enjoy, and I praise Facebook's recognition that gagging someone really doesn't confront their ignorance. The way to confront ignorance is to provide information, not to remove it.

I also rebuke the idea that I should petition anyone to limit my "acceptable speech" (speech is the only behavior possible on the internet) beyond legal demands. Anyone old enough to sign Facebook's Terms & Conditions is also old enough to know exactly how to reject speech they aren't interested in confronting: stop reading and look elsewhere.

The government silencing stupid people is wrong and dangerous.
A group of like minded individuals speaking up and persuading a private company to put limits on acceptable behavior is a great thing. There would be no cover up of the ignorance. This is a confrontation and a rejection of this specific ignorance

I agree with the sentiment of your post title, but as concerns a petition to silence those propagating this reprehensible opinion, I also agree with something a Facebook employee said:

"Silencing stupid people is not how you make stupid people go away. It's by pointing out how stupid they are and bringing those people into the light of day so everyone with a shred of common sense can see who they are and remember never to give them an ounce of respect in any aspect of life. You do not combat ignorance by trying to cover up that ignorance exists. You confront it head on. Facebook will do the world no good by trying to become its thought police."

I don't understand your logic here. None of these things are connected. It's entirely possible that there is a god and that things are getting better for humankind. It's also possible that there is a god and things are getting worse for mankind. Both could also be true in a scenario where there is no god.

At different times in history, different things would be true. Reign of Stalinist Russia = worse time for the world. Smallpox, arguably the most dangerous disease of all time eradicated from the face of the earth = better time for the world. Both of these things occurred irrespective of the existence of god.

Interesting discussion.
